The annual Sloedam Commemoration traditionally takes place on the last Saturday of October, starting at 10:30 a.m.<\/strong> This solemn moment is a fixed part of the Mallard Memorial Walk, but everyone is welcome to attend the ceremony.
The commemoration is dedicated to honouring and remembering the fierce battles fought here during the Battle of the Scheldt in 1944 and the French Battle of 1940. <\/p>

The Sloedam was a strategic bottleneck both in May 1940 and in October 1944. During the French Battle, French troops tried on May 16 and 17, 1940, to delay the German advance and cover the retreat of Dutch and French forces to Walcheren. The narrow dam became the scene of fierce fighting, with the French holding their ground bravely but ultimately being pushed back by the German superiority. <\/p>

In 1944, the Sloedam became a battlefield once again. This time, Canadian and Scottish units attempted to break through the German defenses to liberate Walcheren and secure access to the port of Antwerp. The fighting was intense and resulted in many casualties, but the breakthrough at the Sloedam was ultimately a crucial step in the liberation of Zeeland and the completion of the Battle of the Scheldt. <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t

The commemoration location is about 6 km from the start for walkers of the Mallard Walk. For participants in the 13.0 km and 26.5 km routes, it is important to plan their starting time carefully, so they can arrive on time for the ceremony and attend this meaningful moment. <\/p>

Although the commemoration is part of the walk, it is open to all interested individuals. Anyone who wishes to reflect on the history and the sacrifices made here is welcome to participate in the ceremony. <\/p>
