Stories that need to be heard

The Second World War lives on in Zeeland — not only in archives, but most of all in the memories of those who lived through it. This page gives them a voice. The witnesses shown here were children, young people or members of the resistance during the occupation and liberation. Their experiences form the foundation of our educational lesson cards and allow students to explore what war meant for ordinary people.

Our lesson cards are designed for use in the classroom, during remembrance weeks, or as preparation for a museum visit. Each card contains a personal story, explanations of historical concepts, and assignments that encourage students to observe, think and reflect. Select your municipality below to download the material, or explore the portraits to learn more about the people behind these stories.

Together, we help keep these memories alive. By passing them on to new generations, we gain a deeper understanding of what freedom, choices and responsibility mean in times of conflict.

Choose the story from your area

Each municipality in Zeeland has its own lesson card with a personal wartime story that helps students engage with real-life experiences from their own region. The cards contain the testimony of an actual witness, supplemented with explanations of historical concepts, background information, and assignments that encourage students to observe, think, investigate and reflect. In this way, students learn not only what happened, but also what it meant — for ordinary people, families and communities close to home.

The lesson cards are easy to use in the classroom, during remembrance weeks, as preparation or follow-up to a museum visit, or within history and citizenship projects. Select your municipality below to download the material for free and pass these stories on to a new generation.
