The Driving Forces

The Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland operates 99% on volunteers. Currently, there are over 100 of them! This group of enthusiastic people comes from all walks of life: young, old, retired, working, studying, men, women, academically educated, or practically trained. What unites them all is their enthusiasm and dedication to our museum. The Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland is operated by the Stichting Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland, which also manages the Bevrijdingspark Zeeland. The museum is a registered museum, which means it adheres to professional standards and is committed to high quality in all its activities.

Management and Volunteers

The museum is led by Stef Traas, the full-time director/curator (1 FTE). Stef studied Business Informatics at the Zeeland University of Applied Sciences and sees it as a challenge to run the museum as a cultural entrepreneur. The rest of the work is carried out by our dedicated volunteers. They are jointly responsible for managing the collection, the building, education, publicity, care for exhibitions, restorations, and much more.

Board

The museum organization is managed by the Stichting Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland, with the following composition:

  • Kees Traas (voorzitter)
  • Mr. Marc Weise (Secretary)
  • Kees Meerman (Treasurer)
  • Piet Meulpolder
  • Mr. Filip van Gurp
  • Ing. Kees Sanderse

Our board consists of six individuals with impressive track records in the business world, diverse backgrounds, and varied skills. Board members are appointed for a term of three years and can be reappointed for another three-year term. The board is committed to the Code Cultural Governance and the Ethical Code for Museums. These codes ensure good, responsible, and transparent governance and oversight in the cultural sector. For more information, see the Code Cultural Governance

Collaboration

The Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland places great value on collaboration with other institutions in the cultural field. Through collaboration, cross-pollination occurs, leading to engaging joint projects and initiatives.

The Bevrijdingsmuseum is a member of the Dutch Museum Association and the Association of Zeeland Museums. Additionally, the museum closely collaborates with key national colleague museums within the Foundation Museums and Memorial Centers 40-45. We also participate in the Foundation Day Attractions Zeeland and collaborate with the Foundation Land of Borsele to better promote the region.

The Bevrijdingsmuseum is one of the five theme museums in Zeeland, alongside the Zeeuws Museum, the Watersnoodmuseum, the Maritime Museum, and the Industrial Museum. This collaboration strengthens our efforts to preserve and share the rich history and culture of Zeeland.

In addition to these collaborations, the Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland has many more partners, with whom we collectively keep the culture and history of Zeeland alive and vibrant.
