Object of the month February 2025
This accordion, once owned by Kees Vermue, a war volunteer from Battalion Zeeland, represents a unique combination of music, morale and history. Kees, native of Nisse and son of Job and Apolonia Vermue, volunteered for military service to contribute to the liberation of the Netherlands. When his mission changed to a deployment to the Dutch East Indies, Kees embraced this opportunity as an adventurous bachelor and saw it as an opportunity to experience the world.
Music as a Source of Consolation
Within Battalion Zeeland, Kees gained fame for his positive attitude and musical talent. In the Dutch East Indies he purchased an accordion, with which he entertained his comrades and provided entertainment during the evenings.
After returning to the Netherlands, Kees gave the accordion to his niece, Lonny Boonman. This instrument, which was a source of joy during difficult times, is today on display at the Liberation Museum Zeeland. It stands as a reminder of the importance of music in raising morale and providing comfort, and illustrates the personal stories of Dutch soldiers in the postwar years.
