Object of the Month May 2024
England Escaper J. Stouthamer
This month, we highlight a remarkable collection that was donated to our museum a few years ago: the personal belongings of Jacobus Stouthamer, a brave “England escaper” from Sas van Gent. His collection provides insight into his adventurous escape across Europe during World War II, his significant contributions to the Allied war effort in London, and his later role within the Military Government in Zeeland.
Among the items are Stouthamer’s binoculars, compass, silver bracelet with his alias, and various documents and awards. These artifacts represent his journey from the directorship of the labor office in Sas van Gent to his crucial work in London. After arriving in England, Stouthamer was appointed head of the Netherlands Labour Office in London, where he was responsible for the allocation of work for Dutch nationals in the British capital.
After the War
After the war, Stouthamer returned to liberated Netherlands and became involved with the Military Government in Zeeland, a transitional administration responsible for maintaining order and overseeing reconstruction in the wake of liberation. His role there illustrates his continued commitment to Dutch society during times of recovery and rebuilding.

A Unique Insight
His archive and personal belongings provide a unique opportunity to explore the personal and professional life of Jacobus Stouthamer, from his resistance against the German occupation to his contributions to the rebuilding of the Netherlands after the war. This collection highlights his courage and dedication, serving as a reminder of the complexities of war and the strength of human resilience.
