Witnesses of the Struggle in Zeeland
He is still alive, the man from Vlissingen who helped French soldiers. She is still alive, the woman from Domburg who saw the occupier, the bombs, the water, and finally the liberator arrive. He is still alive, the man from Hoofdplaat whose farm was in the middle of the firing line during the Battle of the Scheldt.
The last witnesses of World War II in Zeeland can still tell stories of resistance and betrayal, helplessness and resignation. Zeeland was one of the most fiercely contested areas in the Netherlands, where the population was trapped between water and fire. Shellfire, bombings, and breached dikes—nothing was spared the people of Zeeland.
Stories of Courage and Survival
While we still can, we want to document and preserve these stories for future generations. These interviews will be available at the Liberation Museum and on Omroep Zeeland TV. Our goal is to have these last eyewitnesses reflect on war and peace, and how the memory of the war endures.
Come and listen to the voice of the past. Let the stories of courage, survival, and hope inspire you at the Liberation Museum Zeeland.
